Construction of the Chemours worldwide corporate headquarters in the historic DuPont Building in downtown Wilmington, DE, brought new life to the existing building by creating collaborative work environments with natural light and views for its occupants. The fit-out included 250,000 SF of improvements as well as window enlargement along the historic light wells. The fast-paced schedule creates unique challenges for such a large fit-out with extremely high-end finishes and workspaces. The owner and design team were very sensitive to the historical fabric of the building, and several original elements were preserved and brought back to their original grandeur. A historic grand ballroom with arched plaster ceilings and plaster moldings was uncovered upon demolition, and the original plaster was restored and the moldings recast to approximate the ballroom’s original appearance from over 100 years ago. New ornate interconnecting stairs were installed, as well as vaulted ceilings, decorative chandeliers, rich millwork, historically salvaged Italian marble, and stone flooring. The fit-out was managed simultaneously with INTECH’s renovation of the building’s core and shell.
