The Campus Center at The Episcopal Academy is one of four new buildings constructed by INTECH in the creation of the college preparatory school’s new campus. At two stories and 80,000 SF, the building is sited to face the central campus green, and also creates an intimate outdoor courtyard between its two primary wings. Housing the school’s Library, Dining Rooms, and Performing Arts spaces, in addition to the Headmaster’s administrative suite, the Campus Center functions as the heart of the school for both students and visitors.

There is a varied mix of spaces and facilities within the building, each of which must function well independently, and also must exist compatibly with neighboring spaces. Adjacent functions have vastly different requirements for acoustics, access control, and building system needs. The performing arts area of the building contains not only a 600-seat theater with balcony, light bridges, catwalks, and professional level sound, lighting, and stage rigging, but is also supported by a scene shop with loading dock, a black-box theater, dressing rooms, and rehearsal spaces for both choral and instrumental groups. A full kitchen and servery/dining for more than 500 students is located to one side of the performing arts suite, and the school’s library is on the other side.

INTECH’s challenge in the timely completion of the Campus Center’s construction was to successfully coordinate the wide variety of the building’s needs and requirements, while maintaining a high level of quality and finish at all times. Campus Center construction was integrated with the simultaneous building of the Athletic Center, Lower School, and Academic Building, as well as the 120-acre campus-wide sitework, hardscapes, and athletic fields.

“Building a brand new campus of seven buildings on 123 acres is a daunting task, but a task that was made much easier by hiring INTECH … We are very pleased to have worked with INTECH.”
